Everything Old is New Again- The Fujifilm Instax Square SQ6 Camera

Something that has taken away a little bit of the magic surrounding photography is the lack of instant hard copies. What’s more nostalgic than looking through an old photo album and seeing pictures that you haven’t seen in years? The digital age of photography has given us ease and convenience, but has almost cheapened the value of the images we capture. We can see them on any platform- social media, desktop or phone backgrounds, and even apps like Timehop can remind us of the pictures we took one, two, even ten years ago. I feel like that’s why instant film cameras are starting to make a comeback- people miss the novelty of having just one, unique, private copy of a photo (until they snap a picture of that picture with their phone and post it on Instagram). Nevertheless, it’s nice to feel all warm and fuzzy with throwback technology in this day and age of everything digital.

The SQ6 is the best of both worlds when it comes to modern instant film cameras. It’s not so small that it gives you tiny little credit-card sized images (they’re about the size of a standard Polaroid picture), and it’s not so big that you feel like you need Hulk hands to use it. It’s bigger than my old Canon PowerShot SX30 IS, but being that it’s not digital, it’s much lighter.

The images it takes are by no means going to be as high resolution as what a digital camera takes- but that’s kind of the point. They very much look just like an old Polaroid picture you’d find in a drawer at your grandma’s house. You’re not going to want to use this as your only means to take your yearly family photo!

Also included are three flash filters that just pop on over the flash and cast a hue of purple, green, or orange, over the whole photo:

Don’t mind our dog looking like he was in trouble (he wasn’t). The flash filters are by no means necessary, but they can add a fun twist to your subject, and they’re very easy to just pop on and off.

The SQ6 also has several different modes to choose from that adjust the settings automatically:

I think I’m going to enjoy playing around with the SQ6. You can do a lot or a little with it depending on what you want to use it for. Its main purpose for me is to snap a quick picture around holidays and events just to keep for nostalgic purposes. It’s also going to be great to take baby book pictures with- something we’ve been severely falling behind on!

Right now the SQ6 is on sale at Amazon for $103.81, and comes with the camera, film, color filters, strap, and batteries. Extra film will add up to a little over $1 per image, but there are several buying options on Amazon. This camera makes a great gift to a loved one (or yourself!) and makes a great addition to any tech or photography lovers collection.
